A sample of shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico has tested positive for the Cyclospora parasite, prompting the company to expand its recall across the United States. The contaminated lettuce was distributed to various food service providers and retailers, raising concerns about potential widespread exposure. Health officials confirmed the positive test result after investigating a cluster of cyclospora infections linked to the product.
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes intestinal illness, often leading to prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. Symptoms typically appear about a week after consuming contaminated food and can last for weeks if untreated. The recall now includes multiple brands and bag sizes of shredded iceberg lettuce, as well as some salad blends containing the ingredient. Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and discard any recalled products.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is working with Taylor Farms to trace the source of the contamination and prevent further distribution. This is not the first time Cyclospora has been linked to fresh produce from Mexico, as similar outbreaks have occurred in recent years. Anyone who experiences symptoms after eating recalled lettuce should contact a healthcare provider. The company has apologized for the inconvenience and emphasized its commitment to food safety.
