A longtime business owner in South Los Angeles says his auto body shop has become a daily battleground against open drug use, theft, and piles of trash that he claims city officials have failed to address. The man, who has operated his shop on a busy commercial strip for more than a decade, described the area as being at a "breaking point" due to persistent criminal activity and a lack of basic street maintenance.
He told reporters that people openly use drugs on the sidewalk in front of his business, often leaving behind used needles and other hazardous waste. Customers have complained about feeling unsafe walking from their cars to his shop, and he says he has lost regular clients who no longer want to visit the area. The business owner also pointed to frequent break-ins and thefts from vehicles parked nearby, which he believes are driven by a thriving underground drug market.
Trash accumulation has become another major concern. He said the city's cleanup crews rarely come through, leaving overflowing bins and litter scattered along the curb for weeks. The owner has tried to clean the area himself, but he says the mess returns within hours. He has filed multiple complaints with the city's 311 system but has seen little improvement.
Local residents and other small business owners share his frustration. Many say they feel abandoned by law enforcement and city services, which they believe are stretched too thin to handle the neighborhood's problems. The business owner warned that if conditions do not improve, more shops will close, leaving the community with fewer resources and more empty storefronts. He is now calling for more police patrols, regular street cleaning, and a stronger response to the open-air drug market that he says is destroying the quality of life in the area.
