George Johnson, the entrepreneur who built a hair-care empire that became the first Black-owned company listed on the American Stock Exchange, has died at the age of 99. Johnson's death was confirmed by his family, who said he passed away peacefully at his home in Chicago.
Johnson founded Johnson Products Company in 1954, starting with a single product: a hair straightener called Ultra Sheen. The company grew rapidly, eventually launching the popular Afro Sheen line, which became a staple in Black households during the natural hair movement of the 1960s and 1970s. In 1971, Johnson Products made history by listing on the American Stock Exchange, a milestone that opened doors for other Black entrepreneurs in the financial sector.
Beyond business, Johnson used his wealth and influence to support social causes. He was an early financial backer of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, helping to fund Jackson's civil rights work and his two presidential campaigns. Johnson also helped bankroll the nationally syndicated dance show "Soul Train," which became a cultural touchstone for Black music and fashion. His company was one of the first major advertisers on the program, giving it the financial stability to reach a national audience.
Johnson's legacy is one of breaking barriers in both commerce and culture. He is survived by his wife, three children, and a foundation dedicated to supporting Black entrepreneurs.
