Madeira businesses face major losses after storm causes days-long power outages

Days after a powerful storm swept through Madeira, many local businesses are still digging out from under the financial wreckage. The storm knocked out power across large parts of the island, and for some shops and restaurants, the lights did not come back on for nearly four days. That meant refrigerators stopped running, freezers thawed, and shelves full of perishable goods went straight into the trash.

For small business owners, the losses are adding up fast. A bakery in Funchal reported losing more than three thousand euros in bread, pastries, and stored dough. A fish market near the marina had to discard its entire morning catch, a loss of about two thousand euros. Restaurants fared no better, with many throwing out meat, dairy, and prepared dishes that could not be safely kept.

Beyond spoiled food, the outage forced many places to close their doors entirely during peak tourist hours. With no cash registers working and no way to process card payments, even businesses with backup generators struggled to serve customers. One cafe owner said she lost nearly a full week of income, which she estimates at around five thousand euros, and she is not sure her insurance will cover the damage.

Local trade associations are now calling on the regional government to step in with emergency aid. They argue that the storm was not just a weather event but a test of the island's fragile infrastructure, and that many small firms cannot absorb this kind of hit on their own. While power has been restored to most areas, the economic shock is likely to linger for weeks.
