Flock, the company best known for its network of license plate-reading cameras, is seeing a major shift in its business. According to CEO Garrett Langley, the firm's drone division has become its quickest expanding sector. Langley made the comments during a recent interview, explaining that the technology is moving beyond simple surveillance and into active public safety work.
The drones are being designed to work alongside Flock's existing camera systems. While the cameras capture static images of passing vehicles, the drones can follow suspects, monitor large crowds, or get a bird's-eye view of an accident scene before officers arrive. Langley stressed that the goal is not just to watch people, but to give police better information so they can make faster, safer decisions. He also mentioned that the drones could be used for civilian purposes, such as searching for a missing child or assessing damage after a storm.
Langley acknowledged that drone use by law enforcement raises privacy concerns. He said Flock is focused on building transparency into the system, with clear data retention rules and strict limits on who can access the live feeds. The company believes that by showing how the drones are used, they can build trust with the communities they serve. For now, the focus is on expanding the program carefully, with the CEO noting that the demand from local agencies has been surprisingly strong. As the technology gets cheaper and easier to operate, Langley expects the drone fleet to grow even faster in the coming year.
