Ten years on, Britain counts the cost of Brexit

Ten years on, Britain counts the cost of Brexit

A decade has passed since Britain voted to sever its ties with the European Union, a decision that was sold as a path to sovereignty and prosperity. Instead, the economic ledger shows a persistent and painful deficit. The promise of untapped global trade deals has not compensated for the loss of frictionless access to the continent's massive single market, which was once the nation's primary trading partner.

The cost is not abstract. Businesses, particularly small and medium-sized exporters, now drown in paperwork, customs checks, and new regulatory hurdles. Investment has stagnated as foreign capital, once drawn to Britain as a gateway to Europe, has flowed elsewhere. The Office for Budget Responsibility has repeatedly estimated that the UK's GDP is roughly 4% smaller than it would have been had it remained in the bloc. This translates into billions in lost tax revenue and slower wage growth for ordinary workers.

Beyond the numbers, the political landscape has been reshaped. The Conservative Party, which championed Brexit, has cycled through five prime ministers in as many years, struggling to deliver on the promised "sunlit uplands." Labour, now in power, is cautious, avoiding any return to the single market or customs union, fearing a political backlash. Meanwhile, public opinion has shifted. Polls consistently show a majority now believe leaving was a mistake.

The irony is sharp. The vote was a cry for control, yet Britain finds itself more isolated and less influential on the world stage. Ten years on, the debate is no longer about whether the cost exists, but how much longer the nation can afford to pay it.
