Novo Nordisk sues GLP-1 rival Eli Lilly over claims of false advertising

Novo Nordisk sues GLP-1 rival Eli Lilly over claims of false advertising

Novo Nordisk has filed a lawsuit against Eli Lilly, accusing the pharmaceutical giant of running advertisements that are "false and materially misleading." The legal complaint centers on marketing for competing GLP-1 drugs, which are used for diabetes and weight loss. Novo Nordisk argues that Lilly's ads ignore recent clinical data and present a distorted picture of the drugs' effectiveness and safety.

Eli Lilly has pushed back strongly against the claims. In a statement, the company said its advertising is "truthful" and "grounded in the most direct scientific evidence available." Lilly maintains that the messaging is accurate and designed to inform healthcare providers and patients about legitimate differences between the treatments.

The lawsuit highlights the escalating rivalry in the booming GLP-1 market, where both companies dominate. Novo Nordisk's complaint specifically points to ads that it says downplay risks or overstate benefits without considering newer studies. Legal experts expect a protracted battle, as both sides have deep pockets and a lot at stake. The case could set a precedent for how drugmakers compare their products in a highly competitive and fast-evolving field.
