The final hours of the Minnesota legislative session have arrived, and lawmakers at the State Capitol are scrambling to push through a backlog of major bills before the midnight deadline. With just hours left on the clock, negotiations have intensified behind closed doors as party leaders try to broker last-minute deals on funding, policy, and budget items that have stalled for weeks.
Among the most contentious issues still on the table are proposals for education funding, public safety reforms, and tax relief measures. Both the House and Senate have been working through the night to reconcile differences between their versions of key bills. Some lawmakers have expressed frustration over the slow pace of negotiations, warning that failure to pass certain measures could have real consequences for schools, local governments, and state services.
Governor Tim Walz has been in close contact with legislative leaders, urging them to find common ground. In a brief statement earlier today, he said he remains hopeful that a productive final day will result in meaningful progress for Minnesota families. However, he also acknowledged that some bills may not survive the rush.
If lawmakers miss the midnight cutoff, unfinished business will carry over into a potential special session later this summer. That prospect has many at the Capitol anxious to avoid an extended stalemate. For now, all eyes are on the floor votes and the frantic horse-trading happening in the hallways. The next few hours will determine just how much gets done before the gavel falls.
