IRS adds notices, payment features to business tax accounts

IRS adds notices, payment features to business tax accounts

The Internal Revenue Service has rolled out new digital features for business taxpayers, giving eligible organizations more ways to manage their accounts online. The updates add several notices and payment options to the existing Business Tax Account portal, which is part of the agency's broader push to modernize its digital services.

Among the new capabilities, businesses can now view additional types of IRS notices directly in their online account, rather than waiting for paper mail. This includes notices related to balance due, penalty adjustments, and other correspondence that previously required manual handling. The system also now supports payments on installment agreements, allowing taxpayers to make scheduled or extra payments without calling the agency or sending in checks.

Another addition is the ability to obtain EIN verification documents online. Employers and organizations that need to confirm their Employer Identification Number for banking, licensing, or other purposes can now download an official verification letter directly from their account. This eliminates the need to request the document by phone or fax, which often took days or weeks.

The IRS says these changes are part of an ongoing effort to reduce paperwork and improve the user experience for business filers. The agency has been gradually expanding its online services since launching the Business Tax Account in 2021, with features like viewing tax records, managing authorizations, and filing certain forms.

Eligibility for the new tools depends on the type of business entity and the taxpayer's registration status. Sole proprietors, partnerships, corporations, and tax-exempt organizations may all qualify, but the IRS recommends checking the account portal for specific access. The agency also notes that some features require additional identity verification steps to protect sensitive information.

Tax professionals and business owners who use the portal will likely find the new options helpful, especially for staying on top of notices and resolving payment issues faster. The IRS has not announced a timeline for further expansions, but officials have indicated that more digital services are in the pipeline. For now, businesses that have not yet created an online account are encouraged to do so to take advantage of the updated tools.
