A coalition of New Orleans businesses and restaurants is taking a stand, participating in a nationwide "ICE Out" protest. The movement advocates for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and opposes the expansion of immigration detention facilities.
Local establishments are leveraging their platforms to raise awareness and funds. Many are donating a portion of their day's proceeds to organizations providing legal defense and support for immigrants. This collective action underscores a commitment within the city's business community to advocate for neighbors and oppose policies they view as harmful.
“We're excited about the possibility of not only bringing attention to what we don't want to happen in our communities, and then hopefully, you know, raise some good money to give voice and enable those who are defending people who are our neighbors,” said the owner of Flour Moon, a participating bakery.
The protest highlights a growing trend of civic engagement from local commerce, transforming shops and eateries into spaces for social advocacy. Participants hope the day of action fosters broader conversation and demonstrates solidarity with immigrant communities integral to the fabric of New Orleans.
