New Hampshire Governor Kelly Ayotte held a ceremonial bill signing on Thursday to promote a recently enacted tax credit designed to encourage businesses to invest in childcare for their workers. The measure, which was passed by the state legislature earlier this year, offers financial incentives to companies that help employees access or afford childcare services.
Under the new law, businesses can claim a credit against their state business taxes for expenses related to providing childcare. This includes costs for on-site childcare centers, partnerships with local providers, or direct subsidies given to employees to help cover their childcare bills. Supporters of the initiative argue that the lack of affordable childcare is a major barrier for many working parents, often forcing them to reduce their hours or leave the workforce entirely.
During the signing ceremony, Ayotte emphasized that the credit is a practical step to strengthen the state's workforce and economy. "When parents have reliable childcare, they can show up to work ready to contribute," she said. "This tax credit makes it easier for businesses to help solve that problem."
The governor also noted that the program is designed to be flexible, allowing companies of different sizes to find a solution that fits their specific needs. While the credit is now law, the ceremonial signing was meant to raise awareness among business owners about the new benefit. The state estimates that the credit could help hundreds of businesses offset the cost of supporting childcare, potentially making New Hampshire more attractive for families and employers alike.
