Businesses say NJ gridlock alerts near MetLife on World Cup match days is hurting them

Some business owners near MetLife Stadium in New Jersey say the promised economic boom from World Cup match days never arrived. Instead, they claim that aggressive gridlock alerts and travel advisories issued by officials are actively driving customers away, leaving many shops and restaurants struggling to stay afloat.

The warnings, which urge fans to avoid driving near the stadium and to use public transit, were meant to prevent traffic chaos. But local merchants argue the messaging has backfired. "They told everyone to stay away, and people listened," said one deli owner in East Rutherford. "We stocked up for the crowds, and we barely saw anyone." Several businesses report a sharp drop in foot traffic on game days, with some saying their revenue is down by more than half compared to normal weekends.

The situation has sparked frustration among owners who invested in extra inventory and staff, expecting a windfall from the international event. Instead, they say the alerts have created a ghost town around the venue. "The boom never came," another shopkeeper said. "Now we are trying to figure out how to pay the bills." While officials defend the alerts as necessary for public safety, local business groups are calling for a more balanced approach that does not scare off potential customers.
